    Hello.

I work in a school where we have 40-50 imacs. Our user base is Active Directory and we are running OS X Leopard Server on an Xserve and our clients are all Leopard.

Now I realise there are limitations to using Workgroup Manager – seems they were extremely lazy with this program and have missed out the management of a lot of essential things, anyway that’s another topic.

I have been editing plist files to get the correct dock and finder sidebar settings on lock down. Now I want to remove the choice for student users to browse our network through both the “go” menu and the network icon within the finder (when the finder is set to start at the “computer” level or through the “go” “computer” menu).

Is this just a matter of editing more plist files? If so, which ones? Is there any other ways to stop users browsing the network?

    Any help much appreciated!

It is actually easier than creating your own plist file.
In Workgroup Manager select the group that you want to apply the preference to, then click the preferences tab. One the you clicked the preferences tab click on the Finder option. Inside the finder option you can select to use simple finder and this will prevent users from browsing the network in the finder, you can also select the command tab inside the finder options and there you can choose to not allow the connect to server option from the go menu.

    Thanks for your answer.

We don’t want to use Simple Finder, but even if I put it on they can still browse the network via the top level – Go menu > Computer > Network icon.

Also un-checking the options under the Commands menu still allows – Go > Network

Any other ideas? Someone else has surely had this problem?
