Leopard Client, Tiger Server, directory account failure

I’ve got a Tiger server running 10.4.10 and a couple of clients running leopard. I have two login issues that may or may not be related.

1. OD users can’t login via the console. If the user types in his name and password, the login screens thinks for a while and then shakes its window no. Local accounts work fine. This happens on at least 3 intel leopard clients, including one updated to 10.5.1 minutes ago. A ppc leopard client works correctly.

2. Remote logins to leopard machines via ssh are very slow. An ssh connection takes 30-60 seconds to authenticate. This is true for OD accounts only. Local accounts on the machine are near instantaneous.

Any hints?

A few other tidbits

– root on the leopard client can su to a OD account instantly
– OD account home dirs are automounting correctly
– id, finger, etc instantly show the proper info for OD accounts
– set up was simply adding the OD server in Directory Utility

Did you get any further on this?

I sometimes find that if say, sixteen users login to networked home dirs at the same time, it can take two minutes or more for things to settle down.

Nope, the behavior is still the same. Fortunately for us, our situation allows for a work around by making a local account on the few shared workstations we have. Most users have a local account on their laptops, so its not too much of an issue. Our Tiger server will probably limp along until snow leopard comes out. Surely that’ll fix it. 🙂
