ParticipantHi Guys,
Hopefully there are a few people who have already had some experience with this since Leopard’s been in the wild.
I am loving leopard on my iMac, and I have begun preparing to deploy to one of my labs. I set up Directory Utilities to access my 10.4.10 Tiger server. When I attempt to log in it takes a very long time (about 2 minutes). I did have a problem with Tiger clients not logging in properly, and was helped out by this – https://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=18&showtopic=16657
Could it be something similar to do with automounting? I had a poke around for similar files but couldn’t find them.
Once logged in, I am able to access the users home directory, but I do not receive the preferences I set up in WGM. Users are able to open up applications that they shouldn’t, and don’t receive the custom dock I specified. However, when logged in as a local user such as the administrator they receive appropriate WGM settings. I tried zapping the pram and reissuing the settings, but to no avail.
Surely I couldn’t be the only person experiencing this? Anyone who has been playing… please help!!

ParticipantI know Leopard server handles WGM control differently then Tiger. It was presented at WWDC last year. I have yet to test this functionality.
I just remember i had students use a work around to get access to denied programs.November 7, 2007 at 4:21 am #370455ingenious7
ParticipantFurther developments.
Still haven’t got anywhere with the log in delay, but a little further with the preferences and MCX settings. Network accounts will not use the MCX managed settings I set in the WGM, yet any local accounts on the machine will. Is this related to the way Leopard now handles MCX settings and the new Parental Control features?
I never imagined something that was soooo simple in the past could be so complex and hard to set up now!

ParticipantHave you tested an account that is not in a managed group at all? I was having a similar issue until I tried a user who was not in a heavily managed group and the account was lightning quick to login. I then proceeded to test management settings and found that managing the print settings was causing the delay.
My test setup is 10.5 client and 10.4.10 server. I am currently trying to work through ways to speed up the login when the printers are managed and do not have a solution yet.
I haven’t had an issue with mcx not being applied and if anything would say a long standing issue with 10.4 appears to have been resolved as settings are always applied.

ParticipantIn my experience, Leopard clients can bind to my 10.4.10 servers only when not using SSL. This may be peculiar to my own setup.

Has anyone figured out a solution to the slow logins due to printer management in Workgroup Manager? I am having the same problem.

ParticipantSo I’m not alone facing to that sort of case.
Leopard clients do completely ignore the rules set in WGM. Tiger clients work correctly… Has Apple released a buggy Client ? 10.5.2 doesn’t seem to bring a solution there for now…

ParticipantAre you having problems with all mcx settings or just user/group? I was just setting up a mobile lab and found the wireless took a bit to connect but mcx settings worked fine. They were set on the computer level though and from 10.4.11 server. Logins were also about the same speed as the 10.4 clients.

ParticipantWell, I’ve ‘cut my losses’ so to speak. My new Leopard Server Xserve arrive three days ago and I have most critical services up and running. 10.5 and 10.4 clients can both log in at speeds as if they were local accounts. Even the old G3s on Tiger are doing quite well ;). I am very impressed, but I still have an issue with my computer groups (albeit quite a different one). I’ve posted here if anybody thinks they are up for a challenge https://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=19148&page=1#19148
