I manage computers at a small college, and right now I’m trying to think of ways to make administration a bit simpler and more uniform. What I’m thinking about right now is having each computer authenticate to our G5 Xserve. I’m hoping that this will allow me to specify user privledges and setup plus adding mount records without going to each computer (besides the first time for setup of the ldap authentication). I’m stuck between each student to having their own account or creating accounts for the divisions of students like: writing, digital craft, etc. My second quandry is that I would rather not have their home folder located on the server. I would rather it be on the local computer so that things that don’t need to be centralized aren’t taking space on the server. How would I go about doing this? I’m not solid on either solution yet, so if anyone thinks that I may be heading in the wrong direction, please let me know. I’m still a bit new to this side of things.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian
