kerberos and od/ldap

After much trouble I have managed to set up kerberos! All is working great, apart from the fact that the only way to and new user principles, or change passwords is to do so manually. The od does not seem to be syncing with kerberos, and it never has done. I had to set up all the user principles manually and the service ones using some command I have now forgotten!
Is there a step I missed in the set up? How can I bind the two password dbs?

PS I had to hand crank kerberos because it was not started automatically. (I believe my dns is now good)
