KDC stopped running – hand-crank question

My KDC stopped running after starting OK upon intitial promotion to Open Directory Master. I now have users populating the LDAP database so I’m loathe to demote to Standalone and back to OD Master.

For some reason, KDC stopped running. I followed the hand-crank instructions upto krb5kdc and got:

krb5kdc: cannot initialize realm BURTON-COLLEGE – see log file for details (follows)

Jul 27 13:55:05 localhost krb5kdc[591]: Cannot find/read stored master key – while fetching master key K/M for realm BURTON-COLLEGE

Help !

BTW – do I need to make changes in Windows for Kerberos or does Panther get what it needs for KDC regardless ?

What do I do if the krb5kdc directory doesn’t exist in the var/db directory?

It doesn’t seem to be getting created with any of the hand crank steps.
