Ispell make all blows up

Hello everyone. I am following the destructions from https://www.afp548.com/Articles/web/squirrelspell.html and can’t get past make-all. The compiler tells me that there are no words in the american dictionary and it’s all downhill from there.

What’s going on here?

I’ve tried several times to compile ispell for SquirrelMail on 10.1 and 10.2. I could never get it to work.
