When making new network users’ Home Folders, is it possible, by default, to have:

write-protected desktop folders

extra subject-folders within Documents, e.g. Math, Science, History

any ideas?

Yes, it is possible.

The exact mechanism depends on many factors, but boils down to “how are the network home folders initially created for your users”? This, in turn, might be related to the initial account creation — how are your network users’ accounts created (and where)?

What type of network directory service are you using?
Where are your network homes hosted?

Home folders are stored on four internal drives on the single server

They are created on the appropriate drive when a new user is made using ‘Create Now’

All on LDAP Open Dir Master – Snow Leopard Server on a single MacPro

Then if you modify the default user template on the server, all new accounts created after that will have their home folders created to match the altered default user template.

/System/Library/User\ Template

Thanks that sounds good.

I notice that the User Template is ‘no access’ – presumably I modify it when logged in as Root? (rather than change the Permissions)

I worry that you might be in over your head if accessing the root-owned User Template is confusing. Yes, you’ll need root privileges; no, you don’t need to login as root if you don’t want to.
