Over the summer I created two fresh images of 10.4.10 (PPC and Intel) and deployed them via NetBoot/NetRestore. Since then, every Mac in the school logging into network homes has been suffering from constant, unexplained crashes from third party apps such as photoshop, kid pixs, opera, and even safari. This may or may not be related, but also jumping onto any SSL site with any browser will almost always lock that browser up solid. If it does load, logging into a web service will not work. Finally, launching a web shortcut in the dock has called some random programs like xgrid, MS picture gallery, Java SDK, and it changes globally as new clients try it…it is just so bizarre… The only time the logs generate anything is when an app crashes, and then it is just a ton of hexadecimal strings that I can’t make sense out of.

I am so sure that this is all somehow related to 10.4.10 and older network account libraries, MCX caches, corrupted .plists, etc., but I just can’t make the connections or discern any patterns. I’ve tried tests with freshly created user accounts, and fresh images to no avail. I’ve also gone through every permission in WGM with considerable scrutiny. I’m about ready to throw the towel in and beg my District Technology Coordinator to book a consultant, but I’m still hopeful in looking for answers on forums.

Has anyone experienced this kind of flakiness or something similar?

    Thanks in Advance,

    Elliot

Thanks so much for responding…I’m sorry, I failed to clarify these points – when logging into these Macs as local users, everything works perfectly. I also did try setting up a Mac from an install disc, performing the least amount of configs I could to make the server aware of the client, and installs of the offending apps…the problems are still occurring, unfortunately…

I’ll sleep on it for now…

if you enabled spotlight on your mounted volumes, it could be related to a documented memory leak. I suffered from this problem and I had applications crashes and degraded overall performance after a few spotlight searches. It took me some time to figure out the cause of the problem. The solution exists and it works:
