You have to appreciate the simplicity and results of this approach to installation, but what I find annoying is the
chicken/egg or cart/horse factor when applying patches. This to me is just too much guess work.

If there were a means of authoritatively determining which patch/update/upgrade/package should be applied in what order,
this would be a much stronger tool. I mean, Apple Software Update has some logic when applying these updates — isn’t
there someway we can tap this?

Being able to programatically determine the install order is really the grail here, no?

I had the same thought, but I don’t think that there is any low-hanging fruit on the automation side. So I thought instead that if there was a way of easily sharing these lists of updates that it would at least ease things quite a bit (plus then we would all be testing on the same base image, so troubleshooting would be easier). So I created the InstaUpToDate script to go in front of it. So far it has not taken off, but once the big projects of the summer get done I will be back to hacking on it a bit.

Well, after posting this I got to thinking about mining the Apple Software Update log for this info. I had not considered it
before but his could certainly be used as a reference for a script or a simple list as you suggest.

    Thanks.

Instead of a script that keeps track of updates for you (which change pretty often), I think an InstaDMG wiki would be even more helpful.
