ParticipantI don’t want to beat the instadmg and 10.6 subject to death, but I was wondering if someone could explain why the installer skips certain Apps.
The problem is that the installer decides to install to /var/run/DoNotInstallinstaDMG revision 212
BaseOS is the SL install DVD
I disabled chroot by setting DISABLE_CHROOT=true in instadmg.bash
running instaUp2date with the 10.6_vanilla.catalog
installer[8191]: _installNextPackage of 1
installer[8191]: Starting installation:
installer[8191]: Preparing volume “InstaDMG” for installation
installer[8191]: Configuring volume “InstaDMG”
installer[8191]: Preparing disk for local booted install.
installer[8191]: Free space on “InstaDMG”: 43.6 GB (46853115904 bytes).
installer: Package name is Mac OS X Update
installer: Installing at base path /private/tmp/mount_folder.IjIOxG/mount_point.st9gg3
installer: Preparing for installation…..
installer: Preparing the Disk…..
installer: Preparing Target Volume
#installer[8191]: Create temporary directory “/private/tmp/MacOSXUpd10.6.1.pkg.8191kMJoIf”

ParticipantThere are lots of things that don’t make sense here:
1) If you are running rev212 then you should not need to turn off chroots, as that version does so automatically when running on 10.6…
2) Are you booted from 10.6? In order to install 10.6 you have to be booted from 10.6. If this is not the case, then it will not ever work, and that would make sense of everything, including the fact that your logs do not look like my logs. The 10.6 installer program has be re-written, and there is no reason to believe that the 10.5 installer is capable of installing 10.6.
3) Have you been messing with the default values? The free-space reported on your target dmg is way too low otherwise. There is no reason to go messing with that value. The space on the initial DMG is like Monopoly money: not really worth anything. Playing with this number will not save you any real disk space, and will just get you in trouble at some point.
I am going to look into disabling 10.6 installs while running 10.5…

ParticipantHi Karl,
I was indeed building from a 10.5 machine, I did not realize that the installer had changed that much.
The only default setting I changed was the CHROOT setting in instadmg.bash. I’m glad this issue is solved, the only downside is that I have to move the Xserve that I use as buildstation to 10.6.I realize that you have the hot breath of a lot of sysadmins in your neck, and I’m pretty occupied myself, but if you need some help, just shout.
Thanks,
Arjen

[/p]
Can you set yourself up with a 10.6 build station running the client OS instead of using an Xserve? Seems like overkill and if you’re running any services on that box, you might not want to upgrade just for this purpose.
