ParticipantIs anyone else having issues getting Java to run with an InstaDMG build? I have two separate builds with all updates – but Java won’t run on either one of them. I can’t even launch Java Preferences – it just crashes. The logs show:
dyld: Symbol not found: _kJVMInfoHomePathKey
Referenced from: /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java Web Start.app/Contents/MacOS/Java Web Start
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/JavaVM
Exited abnormally: Trace/BPT trapAnyone else seeing this?

ParticipantI have a couple of images with Java on them, and have not seen a problem.

ParticipantI have also not seen any issues but I will now go look directly at what your pointing too…… I will point out that the underscore in the file name you are pointing to may be related to the issue brought up in the ‘https://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=23887’ repair permissions thread by AllenMarcus
That does not help right now, but maybe check to see if its a simlink/alias and maybe fix it?
just a wild suggestion.March 25, 2009 at 4:53 pm #375807jwinders
ParticipantI had a similar problem last week with my first go at InstaDMG. I figured out the problem was installing java update 3 without first installing java update 2. U2 does not require U1 but U3 does require U2. I don’t remember the exact error in my logs but java prefs would not open and no java apps worked.

ParticipantI have the same problem. I am installing U2 then U3.

ParticipantAs a little plug: InstaUp2Date does have this correctly in the vanilla.catalog file. Even if you are not using InstaUp2Date it might be worth watching the vanilla.catalog file for a known-good list of updates that is in a known-good order.

ParticipantAwesome – thanks everyone. I will test this out tomorrow and post back my results!

I am using the vanilla catalog and I am seeing the issue.

ParticipantOk – sorry all. I totally caused this myself. I had the java 3 update in my list and found towards the end of my base updates, I had java 2 still in there. Removing that obviously fixed my issues. Wow.
March 26, 2009 at 7:47 pm #375824larkost
ParticipantYou do need to have both updates in, but in the right order. The update 2 does not require update 1, but update 3 does require update 2.

ParticipantThis is still a problem for me though. I used the vanilla.catalog and java doesn’t work in the resultant image. Can anyone confirm that is does work in an image create through InstaDMG?

I saw an error similar to this yesterday (dyld: symbol not found, I don’t remember the rest) on a freshly imaged Tiger machine (non-InstaDMG). The problem in my case was that the machine kernel panicked while installing updates. This killed Installer.app and the cli version. I just reimaged it to fix it.

Participantug. I create a new image and I still see the same problem. This is, of course, a show stopper for me. I even tried reinstalling Java, update 2 and update 3, and it didn’t help.
Any ideas?

ParticipantOK, more info. I created an image using only the 10.5.4 DMG file and unfortunately, java doesn’t work. I installed the same image manually onto the Mac mini to check, and java does work. Java only doesn’t work if the image is created through InstaDMG. 🙁
I really want to use InstaDMG as I see it as a great time saver, but this is a show stopper for me.
Any ideas?

Participant10.5.4? That might be your problem right there: Java Update 3 requires 10.5.6.
