I am creating a 10.6.5 image on a 10.6.5 machine. Everything installs perfectly (ex: I checked my logs – debug.log and package.log). I restore the image via ASR and reboot it and all my updates and applications are installed. The only problem I am having is this:

iLife Support 9.04 keeps showing up in “Software Update”.

Why is this? The “InstaUp2Date” logs (debug.log and package.log) tell me that it installed just fine, but when I go into “Software Update”, it wants to re-download it. I’ve tried deleting my caches, but it didn’t change anything.

The “iLife Support 9.04” update is the only update that I have to re-install to get it disappear from “Software Update”.

    I don’t get it!

    Note:
I am running InstaDMG version 1.6rc1 (svn revision: 388). I’ve tried different builds. Nothing works.

Hey, I’m pretty new to instaDMG and have been lurking on the forums for awhile. I’ve noticed this same issue. I’ve built several 10.6.4 images just fine but on my 10.6.5 I just tested iLife Support 9.04 doesn’t work. Anyone found the fix? -Ndpete

Started today to have a look at instaDMG (after viewing the MacSysAdmin Sessions and Documentation) and I got the exact same problem.

Thanks in advance to whom will explain how to fix this.

If you install iLife using InstaDMG, it requires you to reinstall 9.0.4 support (due to how iLife installs).

Basically, vanilla contains the 9.0.4 support update, but if you install iLife further down the build train, it wipes it out. The easiest solution is to add the 9.0.4 update as the last item on your iLife09.catalog file and it *should* resolve the issue.

I just build an image today with no iLife on it and I included the 9.0.4 update, it works perfectly so long as you don’t install iLife on it. Once you do, you *must* reinstall it after iLife is installed.

If you can get hold of Composer by JAMF do so. It can build a fully patched iLife installer that can be put in a catalog without it blowing away the iLife 9.0.4 support installer. Composer can assist in many other ways also by building packages for lots of other software packages that require more wrangling than usual.

I will note iLife 09 can be installed using InstaDMG as is, fully updated, using the iLife09.catalog. For images that always have iLife09, I do it that way and it works well.

I use a repacked version of iLife 08 and 09 for my main faculty staff image, the correct version gets installed at image time via DepoyStudio.

I had a build for 10.6.4 that had iLife 09 working just fine. When I switched in the Combo update for 10.6.5 is when I saw that iLife 09 Support was dropped. I hadn’t made any changes to the order of the install. I’ve verified and the 9.04 Is installed after the iLife09 Package. Maybe its just being goofy so I’m trying it again just to make sure.

    Update:
Ran a new build and made sure the iLife 9.04 Update came after the iLife install and it still didn’t get applied. I’m running a new build with a different catalog scheme to see if it fixes it. If it doesn’t I’ll re-run the build with the 10.6.4 Combo update instead and see if it still doesn’t apply the update.

    Update #2:
New catalog scheme failed to make the update worked. Check in my package.log and The update is applied with 10.6_Vanilla. Then later iLife09 is installed and then when the iLifeUpdates run it installs iLife904 again thus “fixing” what the iLife install messes up. It still doesn’t work. This same scheme used to work just fine when I was building 10.6.4 images…any ideas?

Note (not really related): The old 10.6_Vanilla catalog has the Remote Desktop 3.3.2 the new one doesn’t. After restore I was prompted for that update as well…I’ve since added that update to my build…

I’m honestly not sure what is going on there. I tested it like this:

I built a vanilla image using the one I posted to the mailing list without iLife Support 9.0.4 and ARD.

I then installed iLife 09 manually, didn’t prompt for 9.0.4 via software updates after that.

I installed iLife 2011 manually, it didn’t prompt for iLife support either after that.

Perhaps I will try a build using iLife09.catalog + the vanilla catalog and see what happens. Something wonky is going on for sure.

It’s not the svn revision or insta-anything, it’s the package requirements looking at the wrong volume and/or doing the wrong thing.
To get around this, here’s the order that’s always worked for me(again, I only do iPhoto, but this should work with the entire package regardless):
    iLife09
    iLife Support 9.0.4
    iPhoto 8.1.2
    iLifeSlideshow_11

I can’t recall where I saw this in this forum, and I got that package from somewhere, maybe even in the iLife09.mpkg bundle itself, or a downloaded update.
Please let me know if it works for you,

Would it be possible to update this on the SVN so its in the correct order?

I figure if there is a specific order that works, might as well get the SVN in line with that.

THERE’S GOOD NEWS – don’t get discouraged by these first points:
Sorry folks, but I can’t reproduce the issue anymore! I tested on a MacBook Pro 1stGen Unibody from late ’08 so far, I’ll test on the MacPro from ’08 as well, but the vanilla catalog worked for me(just needed to update iWeb to 3.0.2, since I’m testing throwing the entire suite in without an installerChoices.xml – it’s possible one of those updates or 10.6.5 clear up the Slideshow/MediaBrowser issue).
Here’s the part of debug.log where I think the issue was occurring:
/postinstall: Error getting stat info for “/Volumes/Vertexd/idmg.QpYx/idmg_mp.ltKtSystem/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iLifeMediaBrowser.framework”. Error 2: No such file or directory
PackageKit: Executing script “./postinstall” in /private/tmp/PKInstallSandbox.4kwTjl/Scripts/com.apple.pkg.iLifeSlideshow_11.37c3tt
./postinstall: Error getting stat info for “/Volumes/Vertexd/idmg.QpYx/idmg_mp.ltKtSystem/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iLifeSlideShow.framework”. Error 2: No such file or directoryspotlightReindex: cannot run during command line install!

Which is self-evident as to what the problem is. I found the earlier forum post on this issue, https://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?showtopic=26506
And here’s why I can’t throw iLifeSlideshow, which I believe was the only one necessary: what’s the URL on apple.com/support/downloads?
The good news: you can manually go to http://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog, search for iLifeSlideshow, and copy the url to the package out. I haven’t thought of a smarter way to do that yet, and still can’t automate that process nor integrate it into the vanilla catalog, but it is available, so whoever actually does need it can access it from an authoritative source(my sha1 or the download is ac334a174cc599d1af6accd9c44bfdc3ae0457cb, btw).

Oh, and my iLife09 media(the mpkg’s sha1 is 56c294ab41a879aea48f1bea88c2523753d6c304) is recent enough that my catalog file(again, paired with 10.6.5) didn’t need iDVD, Garageband, or Digital Raw updates, but I’m leaving that in for people with old media since it does no harm.

I’ve never seen a problem with the iLifeSlideshow. I Don’t really understand Allister’s post…Haha I’ve read it 3 or 4 times now 🙂 I think I’m tired seems like everything is deciding to break these last few days at work….

My problem is the iLife support 9.04 update it’s self. I’ve tried 6-7 different build trains trying to get it to work and nothing has fixed it. It is driving me nuts cause I deployed several machines about 2 weeks ago and that build didn’t have this issue. Now all of a sudden it’s not installing the update.

I’m trying one last build. If this doesn’t help than honestly I have no clue what to do differently. I’ve tried everything I can think of in about every possible order. I’ll just give up and find some other solution to deploy iLife to my images…

    ndpete,

Please post your OS disc build and iLife mpkg version as a comment, and your catalog files and debug log either in a pastie or githubGist or dropbox link. I really want to help you get to the bottom of this, @mboylan on the twitter found he only needed to have it run AFTER iLife09 itself to have it applied properly. Let us know, or hey, email me through my profile and we’ll work it out. Good luck,

    Allister

I’ve got one more idea before I give up 🙂 haha I’ll run this last try today and see if it fixes it. Only problem is it will probably take a while to build. Wish me luck. If this doesn’t work then I’ll start posting my info. Basically what I’m gonna do is on a separate system I’m just gonna start from scratch. I say it will take a while cause the machine isn’t very powerful and unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to run it with a scratch disk. Oh well wish me luck.

The “iLife 09 Support 9.0.4” will not install via instadmg (instaup2date). Once you install “iLife 09”, your hosed. No matter where you place the “iLife 09 Support 9.0.4” update in your catalog files, it will still need to be installed manually afterwards (via Software Update). I have been working with this for 5 days and I am the originator of this post.
