iChat server – OD groups

We’ve had a stock 10.5.4 iChat server running here well for some time now, successfully authenticating to our OD setup and working well with our SSL cert. However, there doesn’t seem to be a way to make iChat server aware of OD groups so we can provide a default organization in the client’s buddy list. We can auto-buddy everyone, but if you have a few hundred employees this becomes a pain without some group organization. Has anyone tried to hack up a solution for this, or am I missing something obvious here?

At first glance it looks like sm.xml could be edited to enable roster.xml, where a set of default groups could be outlined. However, I’m concerned I might mess with the OD-specific components of the iChat server.
