    Hi

I hope someone can please take time to try and assist me with an overview of my desired setup.

I have been given responsibility of configuring services on our XServe in a design studio of 10 people. I am a little out of my depth but willing to listen and learn.
I have a domain registered with one company and I have a 2Mbs ADSL connection (No NAT with 5 public IPs – so I was told by my ISP) with another company.

I want to setup up the email services, I have users currently setup in a local domain.

So how should I move forward?

Thank you for any help and suggestions.

    Hey,

A couple of things, are you just using the server for a file server or anything else?

What I recommend is that you make sure that you have DNS setup on your server. After doing this I recommend that you take one interface and place it in your companies DMZ. Make sure that you have the MX setting checked on your DNS setting.

Once you have completed this make your server and open Directory Master. This will make your setup and mail usage a WHOLE lot easier.

Turn on mail and then go to the setting and advance tab and then check the needed settings. If you want to use POP, then make sure that this box is checked. Then you should be good to go.

If you are using 10.4 server, they have virtual hosting feature, that you could take advantage of.

I’m also new to administering Panther (I came in on Tiger). A system I am trying to get running refuses to permit SMTP traffic at all. We run our DNS on other servers. Does DNS have to be running on this 10.3.9 server for SMTP services to work properly?

When I enable SMTP, the ‘allow incoming mail’ remains greyed out. Mike Bartosh recommends in his O’Reilly ‘Essential Panther Server Admin’ book to toggle the smtp on and off several times to have it take foot. But that’s not improved things. Most frustrating.
