I’ve been working on migrating a server from Tiger Server PPC to Tiger Server Universal (mostly as a learning exercise), and it’s been a real headache. I’m building the ‘new’ server during off hours on the same computer running the ‘old’ server, just installing to an external hard drive for now until I get everything up to speed– so the hardware is identical.

How does one use the serveradmin Terminal command to actually pull in the settings on a new server? I’ve tried exporting all the settings from the old server into a single file and pulling that into the new box, and it doesn’t work. I also tried exporting the settings for each service individually into files and importing them one at a time, and that also did not work.

The only thing I did get to work short of just taking screenshots and manually entering all the settings on the new box, was dragging the proxy icons in the existing server’s settings panes to a folder to create .plist files. Dragging those into the appropriate settings panes on the new box did the trick for pretty much every service but Open Directory.

I’ve got done what I needed to do for the most part, but I want to be able to do this if/when dragging stuff around in a GUI isn’t an option. Has anyone actually used serveradmin from the command line to export and import configurations successfully?
