How to know that tunning is happening

I am planning to use vapor (ssh tunneling) with vnc and was wondering if there was an easy way to know if the traffic is actually going through the tunnel or not. Other then closing a firewall on the port (5901) Also does the firewall need to be open in both directions on port 22?
