OS X server (PPC) 10.4.8 with XRAID people can log on no problem at all with home dirs but after about 20-30 minutes they seem to lose contact with thier home dir, any volume mounts are still good but if they launch mail thier preferences are gone and they are asked to set email again, or if they launch safari thier shortcuts are gone, basically it looks like they’ve lost ~/Library access.

Question: does the Universal version of 10.4 server also help PPC servers in some way when it comes to AFP performance? My AppleFileServer is utilizing over 100% CPU and little RAM which is causing massive problems and while I am working my way thru the tuning guide and the threads, I keep seeing this suggestion to get the Universal version.

We experience something like this on occasion. For us it seems to be that either the client or server has no idea who the user is. Next time it happens try to do a ls -alF of the user home in terminal and see what is returned. If you see numbers instead of usernames, try HUPing DirectorySerivce.

I do indeed see numbers – for everything. You know what tho – I should really start a new thread so am off to do that for organization sake. 🙂
