Greetings!!! In the past our school has used a guest account for our public access labs. We made a guest account by using a standard user account with a home directory refresh login hook. This has worked great. I know that Leopard contains a guest account and wonder if it’s doing the same thing behind the scenes. I would like to try to leverage it, but have one other problem: Our account has always had the login info: ourschoolname / genericpassword as requested by our system administrators. This is now what all the users are used to so I’d like to try to stick with that.
    So long story short:

-Can I alter the login information on the Leopard guest account?
-Can I make a user template for the Leopard guest account or does it use User Template?
-Is there a disadvantage using this compared to a login hook with refresh script?

    thanks for any great ideas!!!

Don’t know much, but if you are using a username/password view of logging into the machines, you can specify an alias for the guest account. Right click, or ctrl click the guest account and choose “Advanced Options”. Hit the plus button for aliases and enter your schools name. Password is still blank at that point though.

Sounds like your way might still be the better option. Good luck!

    vogtstev,

    See here:

you should be able to use Apple’s tools to manage your guest account. If Greg is prowling these forums, he probably could address the location and portability of the management plists that Workgroup Manager will create as a result of editing the settings for the guest account.

I don’t know if you can set a password for guest–I don’t have an opportunity to look at it right now.
