I manage a small server for a charity group (Eating Disorders Resource Center of Silicon Valley). Until now it’s just been for their web site and e-mail, but they’ve requested to be able to access a common folder for file upload and download. They’re all using Windows computers, and the server is a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server.

Easy enough, I thought: create the SMB share point (“\edrc”), add it to the ACL, and grant access to everyone in the “edrc” group.

Except that it doesn’t work: trying to add a network drive from Windows always fails with anyone in the edrc group; the user name and password is rejected.

As the administrator, I can mount the share point from Windows with no problem.

Trying to figure out what’s different between my administrator account and accounts in the edrc group, I noticed that one of my “inherited groups” is “SMB ACL”. None of the edrc members has this group. I gather that membership in this group is necessary for remote SMB stuff like, say, mounting the “edrc” share point as a network drive in Windows.

Am I on the right track? It seems this should be a simple thing to do.
