I am a server newbie, and have enjoyed the articles here. I have set up a 10.4 server as a file server for a company with 5 employees.
Now they’re asking me to try to set it up so they can connect from out of the office too.
    The network setup is:

    adsl — router — giga-switch — server & clients
    | (<- hmm - this pipe should point between the router and "another small company")
    another small company

As you hopefully can see, they share the adsl and router with another small company.

I have tried to access the router setup, in order to route the relevant incoming connections to the server, but it is a part of the ISP setup and can’t be accessed (unless you hire them to do the setup).

The company needs the server to be directly at the giga-switch, as they handle quite a lot of video and need internal bandwith.

Could anyone recommend a solution? my first suggestion is to buy a router instead of borrowing it. I have also seen somewhere that it is possible to use two netcards in the server, but haven’t found any documentation – would it then be possible to connect it both to the giga-switch and more directly to the adsl? or a third option that I haven’t thought of???

    TIA,

You could get two NIC and have one NIC connect to the DSL and then do NAT, this is your only choice since I’m betting you only have one IP. Then have the other NIC on an internal IP, but its just not the best way to handle this kind situation.

The best thing to do is get a router of your own or configure it or have the ISP configure the one you have to do port forwarding. Port forward VPN settings to the server and setup a VPN server.
