Hi all, I posted a similar request some time ago, but I thought I’d try again.
I am a hardware tech trying to build a G4 Xserve from parts I picked up from eBay, customers and some new bits from Apple. I have two main stumbling blocks: Case and Drives.
I have logic, ATA controller, drive interconnect, optical drive, front panel board, front panel cable CPU and PSU. This is all it needs to boot for testing purposes, I will order an optical drive cable and PCI riser card in due course, these are fairly trivial purchases but Apple UK want an obscene amount of cash for an Xserve case. Just thought I’d post here in case anyone ever has any utterly dead Xserves lying about (or in case anyone encounters one in the near future). I figure its possible that a (partiall) fire or smoke danaged Xserve with no working components would likely be binned as useless, so in the unlikely case that someone finds one, I’m not averse to cleaning up the metal work. Maybe you work for an insurance company who bin these sometimes. I don’t mind paying, just not what Apple is asking. Its only a metal box.
Also I’m attempting to build my own drive modules, these are also grossly overpriced, so if anyone has any dead (empty) ones, they might help me figure out some of the logic on board. Again, happy to pay a reasonable price….
