    All,

I have an 10.5.4 server bound to an AD Server (2003 Server). Authentication and the reading of GPO’s work great (thanks to this great site).

I can’t set up portable directories because that amount of network traffic is prohibited in the environment. I can’t have the AD schema extended (though I have vehemently begged), so unc paths can’t be set up.

I read on this site that there is a folder redirection tool in that you can import in WGM preferences details. Using this tool, is it possible to set up a designated folder that will 1. Sync to a server for back up and 2. be able to be viewed offline.

    Is this possible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave

You are getting a few things conflated:

With folder redirection you move aside and replace folders in the user’s home directory (presumably a network home directory) with local resources. This can have a huge impact with things like the Cache directory when you are using network home directories.

The second thing is Home Folder Syncing with “Mobile” users. This allows you to sync your local home folder with the folder designated as your network home folder, presumably by an OD or AD server.

Both of these are setup through MCX/WorkgroupManager. I think what you want is a Mobile user, but it is going to take a bit of work to get that crafted right (it is a complex thing).

Oh.. and GPO’s are not used on MacOS X.

Thanks for the response. It is very appreciated.

As far as GPO’s, I have my clients bound to both an AD and an OD server. Hence, I have been able to assign MSX properties to the group I sent up in OD with members from AD.

    Thanks again

I assume by “MSX” you mean MCX. And if you have your AD server sending them out, then you have extended the schema in your AD server. Or you could be using a Golden-Triangle setup that you have not mentioned. In either case those are not GPO’s. GPO refers to Microsoft’s implementation of the same concept that Apple calls MCX.
