ParticipantHello,
I have been testing out the new 1.3b version of InstaDMG and have been having a little trouble getting it to complete the ASR image.
I updated the instadmg.bash script for my configurations and kick of the install as root. I open the log file so I can watch things progress and everything seems to go just fine up until it is creates the ASR output image. The ASR image gets to about 2.75gb and then all of a sudden all the apps seem to hang. I am still able to drag the windows around but I am unable to force quit an app in the dock or launch force quit using option-command-escape. I let it sit for over an hour and a half hoping it would magically start working again but no luck. During the time the system freezes I also notice that the disk activity stops on the external firewire 800 drive I am using. I have tried this from my 15″ Macbook Pro and my Core 2 duo iMac and both have the same issue. I am running instaDMG on leopard 10.5.2 and creating the ASR image from a retail leopard 10.5 install DVD disk image.
I am sure I am configuring something wrong but for the life of me I can’t figure out what it is. I am trying it again from the iMac and this time I have closed all apps but terminal. If it happens again I can post the contents of the log file.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

ParticipantAre you using the same external hard drive when building the image on each of the machines in question? Possibly the hard drive has directory structure issues?
Can you start an ssh session when you start the script and see if the machine is still responsive to the command line?

ParticipantWell it looks like the third time is the charm. The only thing I did different this time was to not open the console to view the log updates and made sure all finder windows were closed. Just for giggles I am going to try to replicate the issue again later today.
I appreciate your help! InstaDMG is great!

ParticipantJust a quick follow up. I was able to replicate the issue again and I think I narrowed down what I did to make this happen. During my first couple attempts at creating an image I had opened the ASROutput folder in details mode so I could see the file size change in order to verify that the image was being created. After the image was almost complete, finder would freeze. I went back and ran instadmg again, this time without the ASROutput folder open in finder and it worked like a charm. When I tried it one more time with the ASROutput folder open it froze up again as I had expected. I doubt anyone else has seen this issue as there really is no reason to have the ASRoutput folder open but just thought I would post this in case there is another newbie here that has been having troubles.
Now I gotta figure out how to get the Instauser package working. There is a lot of useful info here in the forums I just gotta figure out how to connect the dots.
Thanks again.

ParticipantThats exactly what I did and it worked like a charm. I have actually never used package maker before and not very familiar with UUID and Hash files so it took me a bit of googling and testing to get things up and running.
I have to say I am really loving InstaDMG. I was able to create a base leopard image with Office 2008 and the customized instauser 10_5 script in just a hair over an hour. So far it has worked on the Macbook Pro, Macbook, iMac, and Mac Pro without any issues. We get our Macbook Air’s in a couple weeks so that should be fun. I ran across this article http://managingosx.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/netbooting-macbook-air/ so that sounds promising.
Now I just gotta look into the best way to package apps. I have had the unfortunate opportunity to package apps for XP using Wise so I am hoping this is a bit easier to work with. I heard Iceberg is a decent app to work with so I will check that out.
Thanks again for all the help guys! This has made my life a heck of a lot easier.:)

This may not be an InstaDMG issue. IIRC, this happens when creating an image with SIU too (or at least it did a few years ago when it was NIU).
