I’m having a couple of issues with my home file sharing and I wonder if upgrading to ML Server would help.

The server is a Mini running ML with all updates connected via wired ethernet. It is normally logged in with an admin account “someaccountname”. There is a folder on the drive named domestique that is shared with a group named domestique users having R/W access. Domestique users has a single user in it named domuser.

The clients are MBPs also running ML with all updates and connecting via wireless. Each mounts the shared domestique folder using the domuser account and password. I manually mounted the volume oncethen dragged the mounted volume into Login Items and stored the domuser password in the MBP keychains.

I have two issues; I believe the first is likely resolved but included it for completeness.

    1. Occasionally on waking the MBPs from sleep the domestique icon custom icon on the desktop has been replaced with the generic icon for the share domestique. I used to use a user named domestique to mount the domestique shared data folder and what happened was the real data share got replaced by the domestique homedir on the Mini. I switched from using a user named domestique to a user named domuser on the mini and deleted the domestique user account and homedir.

    2. Sometimes a file that is created on one MBP and saved to the domestique share gets permissions such that only that laptop can edit the file despite the same user being used to mount the share on both laptops.

    3. On one MBP; remounting the share by double clicking an alias makes the volume mount almost instantaneously; on the other it takes 15-30 seconds before mounting. I’ve verified network settings on both MBPs to be identical.

Would upgrading to server resolve these issues? One complicating factor may be that since we live full time in an RV the server only has intermittent internet connectivity; since I only need file sharing services will Server be happy with internet connectivity that comes and goes?

Alternatively; what is the best way to set things up with either Client or Server to accomplish this. What I need is a single shared folder on the mini that is always mounted on the laptops and that stays persistently mounted through sleep periods. This is where we save all of our data rather than in the homedirs on the individual MBPs which are our daily drivers.

    Thanks.
