I seem to have Netboot working, but I have a few questions I’m hoping someone can clear up for me. For started, how do you make a bootable image writeable, so that changes you make are saved when you shutdown. I’d like to make some images that I can actually use on a regular basis. If there is no way to do this, how do people that use netbooting normally make their computers useable?
Also, are there any known issues with G5’s and netbooting?
I have a dual 1.8, one of the newer ones, not one of the originals, and the Network Image Utility dies every time you try and create an image. Also, the machine Kernel Panics a LOT when you try and boot it over the Network. None of my other macs seem to have this problem at all, though. Thats all for now, thanks!

The problem is the Network Image Utility crashed when I try to make an image on my G5. But as far as image writability I’ve used the NIU to run .pkg installers to upgrade to 10.3.6, but how do you run non apple installers, like programs that use installer vice? and then programs that need you to enter their serial number the first time you install them. And just simple stuff like setting your dock and system preferences, how do you do all that on an image?

we make the changes on an external firewire version of the image, then we make a new image.

As for setting default user prefs, you can use Work group manager (WGM) or you can modify the defaults in ‘/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration’
