Ok, please do shout at me if this info can be found elswhere but I seem to have spent days searching without success.

I have an Xserve which does nothing more than filesharing and VPN, but having read about opendirectory etc it occurs to me that it might be useful, but in order to get it running I need to sort out dns (I think)

So I’ve an Xserve and a bunch of iMacs all running 10.4 (inc the server) and an adsl internet connection with a fixed IP address coming through a dratek router.

    Here’s the question:

Can anyone tell me (or point me somewhere) how to make the Xserve happy regarding dns without going near a command line! Everything I read seems so damn difficult. I don’t pretend to understand it, I just need a dummies guide to configuring an xserve which connects to an ISP with a static IP address so that logs dont keep telling me that dns isn’t configured properly.

I know it won’t be a popular thing to say here on afp548, but I use Macs so I dont have to go near that bloody command line.

    TIA

    H

What is the current problem with your dns? – ie what are the errors in the logs.

huwmac: I know this might be a bit late, and maybe you have figured it out already, but maybe this can help you in the right direction.

I’m having a problem with my DNS also what do I need to change to get it back to normal? I ran the changeip -checkhostname test and i got the following

    “Primary address = 192.168.0.150

    Current HostName = nameserver.showroomseven.com

The DNS hostname is not available, please repair DNS and re-run this tool.”
