ParticipantDear all,
I am trying to set up a OSX Server with OSX 10.3.8 Server. After konfiguration the dns everything is fine. lookup of all installed adresses worked fine. But after reboot the system, i am only able to log into the Server unter the adress localhost. After doing so, the green dot of DNS is on and everthing seems to work fine, but lookup don’t find anything. When I stop and restart the DNS, everything is fine again. That is strange for me. I believed, after restart the system everything should work fine by itself. Does anybody know what I may did’d wrong or where I can take an additional look?
Thank in advance and best regards.

ParticipantThank for that hint. It works fine with 127.0.0.1, but it should work with the normal IP i set by configuration start (192.168.*.*), because other wise the netusers are not able to get in contact with the DNS-Server.
When i restart the DNS, itself and the net-users are able to get in contact with the DNS-Server.Like you said, i was looking in the sys.log and found no BIND-Error, but two other strange behaivors.
1 # lookupd{191}: NetInfo connection failed for server 127.0.0.1
at startup and than
2 # SystemStarter: waiting for IPFilter
2.1 # SystemStarter: Disabling IPFilterDo you know if that are the reasons for that? And how I can fix the problem?
Thanks Marc

ParticipantHy there, I probably found the probelem. I installed a new OSX-Server, beginning with Version 10.3.3. Different this time, i installed a second OSX-Server only as DNS-Server and running, before, so that the first Server is able to find himself on the DNS-Server.
After installing the real Server, I configured him with the DNS-Information from the DNS-Server and let him do the DNS-Job by himself. I turned of the first DNS-Xserver. The Main X-Server I rebooted him alot of times, and DNS still running at the beginning. Even KDC was running all the time.
Than, I startet to install the System-Updates up to 10.3.8. Everything fine till than. DNS and KDC still running. Than i installed the last 3 Updates: 2 Security Updates and the last Java-Version. After reboot the System, DNS and KDC stopped running.
I controlled the Interface Information allong the Server Admin App. Under the botton SYSTEM there were Interface Information Name: en0; Family: IPv4; IP Address 192.***.***.***; and DNS Name: localhost!!!!!!!
And there is the problem!!! Befor doing the last Update, the DNS Name was clear named by feldisserver.feldi.****** and everything was fine, after the Update, there is now and only the DNS Name: localhost. Thats wrong at this place.
Does anybody know, where I can change the DNS Name again the right way? Please give me a hand. Thanks again

GuestDId this get resolved? I too have the problem you indicated, and I noticed that in my /etc/hostconfig file, that I have my server in question set from HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC- to HOSTNAME=server.example.com
I wonder if I should change it back to -AUTOMATIC-
