I have a client that has the following set-up.

    6 – 10.2.8 Servers (1 Parent 5 child) – Fixed IP’s
    400 – 10.2.8 clients (fully updated) – DHCP

They run an internal DNS box so that their servers can do reverse look-ups which works fine. However there clients have no DNS records. What are some recommendations for set-ups in this type of environment? How do you deal with DHCP and DNS? I know in previous posts Joel has spoken about the importance of reverse DNS and server, “Every time a client machine connects to OSX Server the server looks up their IP address and tries to reverse it so it can put a full DNS name in the logs.”

Thoughts or examples would be greatly appreciated.

I am hoping this DNS fix is going to alleviate some of the log-in slowness of the client machines. When each client machine is turned on it is sending a lot of packets looking for a DNS server. This is a problem as there possibly 100 machines turned on at that same time and I have witnessed a massive slow down on just getting to the log-in screen as well as logging into the parent server.

Thanks Joel, I will try one of these ideas out.
