Here is a little history first:

Apple tells me that the only way to get their software running properly is to start by setting up a DNS server.

So therefore, I need to set up a DNS server for a department within a college environment. This DNS server will be inside the school firewall and will be internally used for my department only. There is an external DNS server but this is through our ISP. I have 75 users on 30 clients and 1 server. The distribution of machines must stay this way. 27 Clients are running 10.2.6 and 3 are running OS 9.2.2 (printer reasons)

I will be running the DNS server on the same machine as the OS X.2 server for the time being (in the future this will change but we are still in the present and must do so with what I have).

    The question:
For the name server I see that it is usually http://www.something.com, can I get away with the name Macintosh.local.ID_macserver? Then what? I am at a slight loss but am commited to getting this done. Can this be done? any potential issue involved.

I appreciate all feed back look forward to all answers. Thank you in advance.
