Over the last few weeks, clamscan has begun consuming all my CPU periodically throughout the day. There are 2 concurrent clamscan processes that each use an entire CPU (it is a dual processor G5 Xserve). These processes are not looping as each one does complete and a new one starts. They seem to run in the neighborhood of 10-15 seconds wall clock time. As result, it creates a backlog of email slowing delivery to 1/2 hour or more. I can determine no reason why these processes are not taking a few milliseconds rather then many seconds. The only thing I can think of is that there are some large attachments in the incoming email but I find no evidence of that. My max size is set to 25MB but I have not seen any files even close to that. There is also no evidence that the volume of mail has changed either. Does anyone have any ideas where I could look to determine the cause of this sudden processing load? TIA.

Found and article on this issue. The recommendation was to upgrade to a later version of CLAMAV.
