We have been having a lot of performance problems with our mail server (dual G4 Xserve, 10.4.11). After doing some research I found an article that recommends upgrading CLAMAV. I have done that and we are now running version 0.93.3. However, I am not sure what to expect. The original problem was that the ‘clamscan’ processes were consuming all of my CPUs for many seconds. The result was poor performance from the server and large backlogs of email (100-150) during peak hours. The article left me with the impression that the ‘clamscan’ processes were no longer used in the new version but that a daemon was used instead (‘clamavd’). Although we have not hit peak hours yet today, I am still seeing ‘clamscan’ processes run and take almost all of a CPU during that time. Here is what the article told me to do:

My question is, will I still see the ‘clamscan’ process run and consume all my CPU but just not for so long or am I not really properly running the new version? TIA.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that. What concerns me is that ‘clamscan’ is running at all. I was under the impression that with ‘clamd’ it would not run. Either I misunderstood or I am not properly running ‘clamd’.

Yes but I didn’t see where that edit would stop ‘clamscan’. All it seemed to do was add ‘clamd’. Shouldn’t I have commented something when I uncommented ‘clamd’? However, the only place ‘clamscan’ shows up is in the av_scanners_backup section. From the comments that should only run if the others fail. I have a suspicion that I am now running both versions.

OK, it seems to be working now and the ‘clamscan’ processes are gone. All I did was unload/load ‘amavisd’ for the 3rd time. Its a puzzle why the 1st 2 didn’t work as there were no errors.
