Changing Domains & Search Base

So I’ve set up the whole OD environment, replicas, ichat server, and so on. We’ve even added all our users and groups. But we are looking to retire the domain that this directory is based upon and use a different one and thus change the search base.

What’s the best way to do this?

In the protocol screen of OD in ServerAdmin, I’m unable (by design??) to change the search base.

My DNS for the new domain is working fine and the OD server resolves etc. I’m sure I’m going to have to do some monkeying to get the KDC going again but I’m mostly interested in changing the search base.

Sorry, I just saw that this information exists elsewhere on this site. It said…

Is this still it in a nutshell?

It looks like the export users from WM, destroy the ODMaster by making it standalone, recreate it, reimport users and groups…

Any problems with this idea?

This is the approach that I would use.

However, bear in mind that the Export –> Import approach will only preserve the Usernames and Group Names. You will lose the passwords and any other information such as Windows profile paths, homes etc. (possibly wont present a problem).

You’ll also need to re-create the sharepoints and re-set the ownership of your home folders.

For this reason I have a copy of MacinMind’s Passenger to hand at all my sites, with the necessary scripts to import users with *ALL* relevant info as well as set the relevant file permissions on the home area.
