Can’t log into network account from server itself

I have seen this problem in Tiger and Leopard server, and it’s really bothering a friend of mine running Tiger Server right now.

What we’d like to be able to do is create an account that is an LDAP account, but that you can log into from the server itself. Bonus points if that account is a mobile account.

Whenever I try this on my Leopard server installation with my mobile/laptop account, I get a “you cannot log in at this time” message (“Logging into the account failed because an error occurred” – a message worthy of Windows at its worse…)

My friend is getting server crashes and some sort of preferences corruption (we think…) when he tries this on his Tiger Server installation.

Any thoughts? Is this just “not done”? Is there some magic to setting up the file mounts to make this work?
