ParticipantI’m having a hell of a time with Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac and the error that pops up with “Word cannot save this file because it is already open elsewhere.” or “Word cannot complete the operation becasue too many files are open.” I know this error is pretty common and I’ve tried all of the fixes I can find but I can’t get it working right for three of our twelve sites.
Here’s some background info on our setup…
We have twelve schools – ten of them use Mac servers for file sharing. The issue is happening on three of these Mac servers. Users have network home folders and we’re using the Network Home Redirector scripts to keep the caches, microsoft stuff, etc off of the server. Our client computers are a mixture of old 500mhz iMacs, the last model of eMacs, and intel iMacs all running 10.4.9 or 10.4.10. They are managed with Radmind.Anyways, this issue has been happening since the beginning of the school year and I can’t get anywhere with it. We didn’t have this problem last year, but that was before we brought in the NHR scripts and radmind. I don’t know if either of those is causing the problems… But then again the setup is the same for the rest of the schools and they aren’t having any problems.
One slight difference is that these schools have laptops for the teachers with portable homes and home folder syncing setup. I’m not sure if this could cause a problem. On the other hand, it wouldn’t affect the students accounts – or accounts of staff that don’t have a laptop syncing, so I’ve somewhat ruled that out.
I’ve done everything I can think of with the .TemporaryItems folder – created it, deleted it, recreated it, changed permissions all around and back again. The folder.uid folders pop in there when users are in Word, so they have permissions to make changes to the folder.
I guess that’s enough for now. I’ve tried so many things I’m getting disorganized. If anyone has anything that might help, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks,

ParticipantProbably not the answer to your problem but I had a lot of problems trying to open a file and was getting weird error messages from Office because I still had the Office Mac 2004 Test Drive on the computer. It was in the Trash but still caused errors.
