I have a dual processor G5 (PPC) Xserve connected to an XRAID that is a Tiger (10.4.11) OD master. The array contains network mounted home directories and other network shares. Users (~50) are moving files between their home directories and one of these shares routinely throughout the day.

At random times the network comes to a screeching halt for 15-30 seconds. When watching the activity monitor on these occasions the AppleFileServer process consumes both CPUs. This has been happening for many weeks and may have started with the update from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 (which introduced a number of other unrelated bugs as well). After spending weeks trying to track down what is happening, I finally discovered the trigger (mostly by accident).

One unremarkable folder is used to archive unremarkable PDF files. When something is copied from a user’s home directory into that folder (actually in to a sub-folder in that folder) the condition manifests until the copy completes. If the same file is copied into a different folder on the same share, the problem does not occur.

I have worn myself bald scratching my head over this. I am disparately hoping one of you geniuses can understand what is happening and suggest a course of action. TIA.
