Backslash key does not work

Hello,

I have searched on this with google, on this site, and other sites with no luck. I administer our mac network from an Intel iMac running 10.4.10. I cannot type the backslash character and I need to write shell scripts and escape the space key. All I get is the error noise.

I have swapped keyboards and the behavior stays with the computer. The backslash does work in the login box, and it also works on another account on the same machine. So it would appear that there is a user-specific setting, but what? I have trashed some likely suspect prefs with no luck. There don’t seem to be any keyboard-specific ones. The only keyboard inputs that are activated are US and US extended.

Thanks in advance for any ideas on this.
