Auto Pac file Detection

Having never had to implement this, but now am required to do just that, in Tiger can Safari detect pac files automatically through the Network Sys Pref option of Automatically Detect Proxy Settings?

The reason I ask is, it’s currently not working, you have to give it the PAC file URL, and in the coming soon list on the Safari 3 beta it listed Auto Pac file detection, suggesting it can’t be done with Safari 2 under Tiger. It just doesn’t sound right.

Any ideas?

After a brief chat with Apple Support, the gentlemen I spoke to said this was not possible yet. Any evidence to the contrary out there in the real world?
