I’ve searched around a little, and found reference to this problem occurring (usually with earlier versions of OS X) but the only solutions I’ve found have been cryptic or incomplete.
I’m running OS X Server 10.3 (no updates). It installed fine. I populated Workgroup Manager, created the Homes / Network mounts and set up Macintosh Manager. The clients log in perfectly and all is well with the world.
However, since a reboot, I can no longer use the Aqua interface. Instead I’m presented with the Darwin console and and a “login:” prompt. It happily lets me log in as Root. If I log in as Admin I get a brief flash of Aqua before it returns me to the fullscreen console (still logs me in, mind you). All of the services are fully functional, just like before the reboot (namely clients can log in).
If somebody could point me in the right direction as to why this might occur (just used the same approach as the doens of times I’ve configured similar machines) I’d be extremely grateful.
If a concise troubleshooting guide for this problem could be pointed at I’d be over the moon.
Failing that I could cope with running VNC and accessing over the network if it were the only option (Remote Desktop an option, too).
The server hardware is a Single CPU Powermac G4 (933 Mhz) with 748MB of RAM. It has run happily in another 10.2.8 incarnation for 18 months.
Many thanks in advance,
Austin.
