    How did it go…

Does anyone know the advantages / disadvantages of doing a upgrade vs. a migration? Reading the docs the migration will be much more time consuming but does it yield a more stable / robust server vs a strait upgrade on top of 10.3 Server?

I tried on a test server. Fortunately, I made a clone beforehand.

After the upgrade install, no services would run. There was a notation in Server Admin that the services had been updated, needed to be kerberized and to go to Open Directory in SA to do so.

That’s all the instruction there is about it as well. I found a button under the general settings area (which disappeared on execution) labeled, Kerberize.

Foolishly, I believed it would accomplish the required task. I ended up with what was essentially a dead server and had to restore the clone.

    Good day,

Tried to upgrade X Server10.3 to 10.4 last night. Disaster! install ran smooth but at reboot the serial number dialog window had the format of 10.3, well of course I tried both the old 10.3 serial number which I am able to fill in completely but does not accept registration. 10.4 does not work at al, the field sequences are different. After an hour on the phone with Apple the resolve was: I am dearly sorry but you will have to use another set of disks reinstall and format drive. Bummer

I installed the upgrade today on a dual G4 Xserve with 1.5gigs of RAM. I made the smart move and cloned my system drive first. We run LDAP master with 90+ clients using MCX. So far only one client is 10.4 the rest are 10.3.9.

1st install went horrible, everything went as planned on install then the restart came and no registration window or login/boot screen started. I was looking at a blank blue screen with a cursor… No good.

Went back restored my clone ran Repair Permissions again from the CD and got about 130 errors all regarding Tomcat Server (which I don’t use).

Tried the upgrade again, this time I got the registration screen. Everything went right, upgraded nicely. I have seen a dramatic increase in loading of my user acounts within the Workgroup Manager. Already have Weblogs setup for users. Backed up my current LDAP settings and tested about 40 users. Everything seems to go smoothly for 10.3.9 users.

Now it’s on to making a new image for my clients and testing the Multicasting of ASR images.
