We have an XServe (Intel) running OS X 10.5.5 Leopard Server.

All our clients are using 10.5.5.

    Some strange things we see:
    1. DirectoryService will spike to 105% on the CPU about every 5 minutes. Not sure if this is caused by iCalServer or AFP usage. My hunch is iCal polling (e.g. grabbing calendar updates every 5 minutes from each iCal client).

    2. Many “coreservicesd” using “non-mach based call” entries in the log

    3. Many “MDS ChannelPeerCreate” errors, looks like spotlight indexes may be having problems with various sharepoints (or with TimeMachine backup volume).

Any ideas how to lessen the garbage showing up in the log?

What is happening is that sometimes the server screen-saver dialog box is VERY slow to respond. Sometimes it won’t log you in on the first try, you have to try again.

Second, some users are taking 5 minutes to mount a share from the server, but then it works just fine.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

OK, figured out the SLOW performance…

It was being caused by iCal Server.

Many users in iCal “delegate” authority to other users. Unfortunately, when you delete a user from the directory, it deletes the calendar for that user, but not all the “delegate” links in iCal.

So iCal Server was CONSTANTLY asking the Directory for user credentials that didn’t exist. Directory daemon was running at 110% in Activity Monitor.

So, we found a script in OSX Forge to get rid of the delegate proxies. That resolved the issue. Now the Directory Service is running normal, not hogging the processing power. System is now much more responsive.

The MDSChannelPeerCreate could still be a problem, but at least the server isn’t crawling anymore….

Any thought as to what is causing the MDSChannelPeerCreate errors? I get them constantly in my logs, although I don’t see any performance issues that would suggest a problem.
