My current set up is an Xserve G5 with two 80GB drives connected to a RAID card as a RAID 1. No drive is currently in the third drive bay.
What I would like to do is add a third drive module that isn’t a part of this RAID. So, basically, as a stand-alone drive.
    Is this possible?

I tried doing the same thing but megaraid wants two drives.
i ended up striping the whole set together 🙁

I have heard of doing something like disconnecting the cable from the third drive to the RAID card and putting that back into the original SATA on the motherboard. This sound like it would work?

Yes it works …. I tried it with a 700GB drive. Now I have mirrored 80GB drives in the first 2 bays and a stand alone 700GB in the 3rd bay. Don’t plug the 3rd port to the raid card. Plug it to the daughter card that is plugged into the motherboard. It is only a few inches from the Drive bay port.
