    Hello,

We start using instaDMG, trying to transform our very large monolithic education image to an image made by pkgs, and it’s take really a lot of time. We have a lot of small software, each with preferences…

    1) I have a question about instaDMG, i have read that we can use pkg, or dmg or directly Applications to put in our repertory. Is it right ? What’s the best practice .

    2) We use createLionUser.pkg. Is it possible to use this pkg to create a user with parental control ?

    3) Is it possible to create 4 users, by using 4 differents createLionUser.pkg and then to put something different on each profile (desktop, dock, ..)

    Thanks for any answer

    Christian

    Hello Rusty,

Many thanks for your quick and detailed answers. It could be a good idea, but some things aren’t clear for me :

OK, so, when we applied createLionUser.pkg, home folder aren’t created, it’s the system which create them on the first boot. We try to manage all preferences by script, for all applications, but sometimes it’s too complicated and we have to copy preferences files (by example iTunes). The idea is to fix the preferences in User template (by script or file copy).
Normaly, the home folders are build, using the User Template. What will happen if we set by ourselves home folders, the User Template won’t be used ? Or there will be some kind of merge ?

If the User Template isn’t used, no merge, it seems for me quite time consuming to make 4 complete home folders. Our different users will have only a few differences, don’t you think it will be better to make all the work in User Template, and after that to copy some files in the different home folders. Perhaps on the first boot, when the home folders are build. But does the home folders are all created on first boot, or only the first one ?

I will take a coffee, good idea :-))

Yes, it makes more sense to use the user template and script the files you need, but the home folders are not created until a user logs in (IIRC).
Using a launchd agent that checks the user logging in and copies files might work, Or a login hook.

Sounds like you’ve got a plan, I’d try that out!
