I have one Xserve G5 that is our OD Master running 10.3.9. I backup the 80GB system module and the 250GB system module to tape with Retrospect.

I want to upgrade the server to Tiger (10.4) and ultimately to the most up to date version (10.4.2 at the minute).

Can I use NetRestore from my partitioned external 500GB FW drive to clone the system module for something to fall back on ? I can boot from the FW drive into 10.3.6 (desktop not server) so I presume this is OK for the server to boot from while I clone it ? And to use the FW to Restore the clone to the system ?

Also – what’s the best way to upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4 and keep the LDAP database (users, prefs, passwords etc.) intact so I don’t lose anything ?

Any advice gratefully received …. Smile

    thanks

I too have decided to take the plunge this week: Goal – 10.3.9 to 10.4 with no hiccups
Here is what I have done so far
    1) Cloned the server using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external Firewire Drive
    2) Booted an old iBook through this FireWire Drive
    3) Updated the OSX 10.3.9 on the FireWire Drive to 10.4
    4) Checked if everything worked
    5) Step 4 was not successful.
    6) mysql path has changed and took me some time to reset the path in my php config.. finally got mysql and php working
    7) ldap is screwed up. All the user info is present. However passwords are messed up. I cannot login as any other user. I cannot login as an admin to the LDAP database also. I cannot create new users as I cannot login as an admin.
    8) Will keep working with the firewire and figure out all possible gotchas before I go ahead with the upgrade on the main server.

    9) Any help on 7 would be appreciated…..

    I’ll have a go myself.

Our server just runs NetBoot (for installs), Print Service (for 1 printer) and AFP. I’m thinking about stopping these services before the upgrade and trying that. Posts on Apple’s forum suggest downgrading the server to Standalone, upgrading, then promoting again, but I don’t like the sound of that. Did you upgrade/migrate through Setup Assistant after the 10.4 uograde ?
