We purchased a HP1200 SE printer and connected it via usb to our Mac OS 10.1 server. Local printing is great. Initially, LPR printing from Mac OS 9 clients was working fine. SMB sharing and LPR sharing are selected in Server Admin are selected, all settings appear to be right. I cannot get this thing to print via LPR or SMB from remote clients. Somehow through all of my testing and faniggling, LPR printing from the mac clients wont work now. SMB based printing or LPR from windows clients has never worked–and almost all of my clients are WINXP. What would be really nice is a roadmap as to how pre 10.2 printing worked.
(1) Does anybody know where the PrintService for OS X server 10.1 spools documents to? In essence, could a raw PS file be put into this directory and be picked up by the server??
(2) Should the LPR command be able to print locally to the server “OUT OF THE BOX” – ie, printers installed and configured via Server Admin, working ok. LPC is giving me a “daemon not started” error but I also cannot start the daemon.
(3) Could somebody show me a working /etc/printcap and or smb.conf that has some working printer queues in it? Or does Print Services disregard the printcap?
I am at a loss and have spent a lot of time on this issue. I’ve been up and down the web and forum archives, LPR howtos, Linuxprinting mac os x sections, Apple Discussions and cups web sites (I know 10.1 doesnÃt use cups but I was looking there anyways). I managed to get cups to compile on 10.1 but dont know if will do any good or not…
Thanks in advance.
