    Some better examples of what you’re seeing would help. For example, what do you get when you try to nslookup? The wording of the error message will usually give an indication as to the problem.

    As for running your own DNS servers as your own ISP (I won’t get into the vagaries of ISP vs. domain operator…), you need two things:

    1) at least one static IP address

    2) your own domain name

    You register your own domain name at one of the multitude of registrars around, and register your static IP address as being the primary authoritative name server for your domain. Then you’re set.

    If you don’t have a static IP address or are on a residential connection you won’t be able to do this since auth host require static addresses and you need to be able to control the reverse DNS for your IP and no ISP I know of will delegate reverse DNS to a residential connection.
