ParticipantDoes anyone know of a place to purchase drive trays for XServe? I am looking to add more storage, and I am going to just buy some regular drives (Ultra ATA for my older XServes, and SATA for newer) and am looking for drive trays that I can plug the drives into. If anyone knows of an online shop that sells them I would greatly appreciate the information.

ParticipantGoogle found several dozen. Search for “carrier” instead of “sled.”

ParticipantI do see a ton of results for the full drive module, but all I really want are the trays/sleds. Because you can buy much cheaper ATA drives (or SAS drives for the newer ones) and install them in the sleds. That gets you a whole lot of disk space for a whole lot less $$ than buying the full Apple Drive modules.

ParticipantSo I’ve noticed that there is a really inexpensive drive available but the specs say for the recent 2009 Intel XServes. Does anyone know if there is something different about these ones that prevent usage on older Intels or even G5 machines. I can’t seem to find a photo of the connector portion to see if it might have changed. Anyone with some insight or access to hardware to try it?

At this point I don’t care about what’s certified and what’s not, I’m in self-service mode with this hardware now anyhow (XServe G5) I replaced the drives on my XServe G4 with larger than certifed sizes without any issues so I don’t mind wandering a bit into the unsupported realm. It would be much simpler to be able to buy a brand new drive/carrier than to have to monkey around with ebay auctions looking for them which all seem to go for about $100 anyhow and for used ones at that.

ParticipantI am in the same situation. What I found out after long hours of trial and error that the sleds are identical as long as they are SATA ADMS not SAS ADMS. The gotcha on the new ones is if the drive installed runs on 3GB/s on the Intel XServes instead of the 1.5GB/s on the G5 Xserve. A lot of HD’s have the ability to be changed to 1.5GB/s by setting a jumper on the drive. Once you do that the drive will work with no issues on the XServe G5. Hope this helps you out.
