Using LDAP as central Addressbook storage: how?

hello, i'm looking into the possibility of using an LDAP server for central storage of Addresses/Contact Info. I envision that there will be one shared contact pool onto which everybody has read/write access plus one personal addressbook per user. from what i¥ve seen so far, i think the problematic part is the ldap CLIENT, rather than the server, so perhaps my question should be: does anybody know of an LDAP client with which one can add/edit entries? Apparently, the Apple Addressbook can only read ldap contacts... thanks for any help, tom
