swupdate process cramping CPU

Hi - All my XServes on 10.5.6 Server do the same thing. When I use Top under console for each server, softwareupdate is eating my CPU cycles. I have to manually kill that process. I have turned off all the automatic settings under System Preferences and the Software Update server for clients is not used. How can I prevent softwareupdate from eating my CPU cycles?
