Guest Access required for automounting?

In a managed client setting w/network homedirs, is it necessary to have afp Guest access enabled? I was under the impression that the bound client machine needed to mount the "/Network/Servers/servername/homedir_sharename" as a Guest (at startup) so that when a user logs into the client, the homedir within the share can be found. I seem to remember a lot of "user homedir cannot be located errors" when Guest access was not enabled.
